The Lamproom Theatre
The Lamproom Theatre opened its' doors to the public as a theatre in April 1999 with a Gala Opening night featuring two local opera singers, both of whom are with English National Opera. This was followed by a very bold opening production of Arthur Miller's ‘The Crucible'. Since that time there have been hundreds of productions, and each season covers a vast range of work, ranging from comedy to tragedy, music to dance and professional as well as amateur work.
The building, constructed as a non-conformist chapel in 1780, is one of very few Grade II listed buildings in Barnsley. In the 1950's it was sold to the Boys' Club Association and was used by them until its closure in 1995. An architecturally outstanding building, it is positioned prominently on a hill above Barnsley and is soon to become an integral part of the ‘cultural quarter' of the town under the ‘Remaking Barnsley' project, which is being led by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council. The Lamproom Theatre aims to ‘promote and advance theatrical arts within and for the entire community of Barnsley and the surrounding areas.'
