The Norwich Painters included around fifty artists both professional and amateur who were supported by the Gurneys, who founded Barclays Bank. The industrialist J.J. Colman, (of mustard fame) had works by the group on permanent display in Norwich Castle.
Ladbrooke was based in Norwich where he worked with his father to depict all seven hundred of Norfolk's churches. He was influenced by John Constable and JMW Turner. Ladbrooke exhibited at Royal Academy from 1821 to 1872, at the British Institution, the Suffolk Street Gallery and in annual exhibitions of the Norwich Group.
Researcher's comments
The Passing Storm by John Ladbrooke is oil on canvas. The painting is a snapshot of Ladbrooke's countryside. The horizon cuts the picture in half. The great English oak tree stands sturdily amidst the powerful stormy sky. This painting is shows the artist's attention to detail and the dramatic filtering of light. Their palette includes vibrant greens, turquoise and purples. The viewer hardly notices the two horses with a rider disappearing into the distance.
