The mill was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. A water powered corn mill constructed about 1625 and later 19th Century mill housing a rare Hornsby Hot Bulb Engine now occupy the site producing stone ground flour which is on sale in the mill souvenir shop. The 60 acre reservoir built in 1804 originally to keep a head of water in the Worsbrough Spur of the Dearne & Dove Canal is now a haven for wildlife and obtained Local Nature Reserve status in 2002.
